on this day in 1967 Keeping a promise to his wife Merlyn, Mickey Mantle hit his 500th career home run on Mother’s Day, a shot into the lower deck into the right field corner of the lower deck at Yankee Stadium. The ‘Commerce Comet’ , now the sixth big leaguer to reach the milestone, hits the historic homer off Stu Miller helping New York defeat the Orioles, 6-5.

Now that the first month of Major League Baseball is behind us does anyone, but me think that having interleague games everyday just isn’t the same. I believe it’s just a matter of time before all the teams are realigned into, MLB North, South, Central and West, 8 teams each division…

1923 In front of over 72,000 fans, Yankee Stadium opens with Babe Ruth hitting the park’s first home run, a two-run homer off Red Sox hurler Howard Ehmke, which helps beat Boston, 4-1. The new $2.5 million ballpark is the first to feature three decks. http://www.nationalpastime.com/

Since then I only missed the 1979 opening game at Yankee Stadium. Opening day makes all of us feel young again, that your team can have a speical season. Theirs no other sport that equals baseballs opening day. First pitch 1:05PM let the season begin.

The media, the web is all ablaze about A-Rod and PED. I say lets wait until we know who did         what before we pass judgement. It’s how I would want to be treated.

1988 Willie Stargell, who played his entire 21-year career with the Pirates, is the only person elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this year. Blank ballots, sent and signed by nine writers wanting to emphasize the need for very exclusive selections, denies Jim Bunning entrance to Cooperstown as he receives less than the 75 percent needed for induction due to the votes which are counted, but do not name any players.
